Would you like to know more about Conflict Management? We hope the answers to these FAQs are helpful;

I tend to avoid conflict most of the time – how could I help myself to address it when I know I should?

Give yourself time to prepare. Preparation is the key to dealing effectively with conflict. Your preference to avoid can be quite helpful because it gives you time to think and prepare your approach. So, there’s nothing wrong with avoiding conflict, but most conflict doesn’t go away. This means you’ll have to accept that it needs to be dealt with at some point. This is all part of the preparation process.

Some people see me as aggressive when dealing with conflict – How can I tone this down?

Self-discipline, preparation and practice are the keys to dealing with your aggressive nature. A lot of people get wound up, frustrated or even angry when in a conflict situation. This is a natural human reaction. But knowing how vulnerable you are to losing your temper or being aggressive is the first step to dealing with the problem. If you know it’s going to happen, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be able to deal with it. Dealing with it means literally pinching yourself it means having a pact with yourself that you will for instance control your emotions next time it happens. You are the only one who can make this happen though, you’ll therefore need to be disciplined.

I’m a team leader and we’ve got some conflict between team members – can you help with this?

Yes, we deal a lot with teams who are experiencing interpersonal conflict. We’ll need to meet you first to find out as much as we can about the situation and the issues surrounding the conflict. We’ll need to know the conflict stems from interpersonal relationships or differences in opinions regarding operation or team policy. Once we know this we can present you with some thoughts on how to approach the issues and solve the problem. This might take the form of an in-house session(s) or an off-site.

I seem to spend my entire time trying to solve conflict between people – other people don’t seem to be bothered about it – do you deal with this kind of issue?

Yes. We know that some people find it very difficult to work when conflict is going on around them. They therefore feel that it’s their responsibility to deal with and solve the problem. But it’s NOT! (unless you are the team leader). You need to try to pull yourself away and focus on doing your job. However, if the conflict has a direct impact on your ability to do your job, then yes, you need to get involved in trying to solve it, otherwise leave it to the people directly involved.

Is it possible to become more assertive so that I can stand up for myself when I know I’m right?

Yes, definitely! In fact we cover assertiveness in relation to conflict management on the course. Assertiveness isn’t about shouting the loudest though, particularly in the context of conflict management. It’s about having the ability to listen and then to calmly and confidently put your opinion forward. You’ll learn all about this too.
