Would you like to know more about Negotiation? We hope the answers to these FAQs are helpful;

Do you have to be a really confident person to be a good negotiator?

It definitely helps to have self confidence. Our Negotiation skills course will build your confidence levels. You’ll find out how to negotiate effectively in a confident way. We’ll introduce you to different styles of negotiation and give you a chance to try them out. You’ll also know how to plan the negotiation and therefore feel much more comfortable when it starts.

Do good negotiators achieve a win/win situation every time?

It depends what you call a win/win situation. If a win/win means both parties going away satisfied with the outcome, then yes, good negotiators are able to achieve this. If a win/win means both parties achieving everything they wanted from the outset, then no, because this is often just not possible, even for the most experienced negotiators. Good negotiators set the bar at the right height by setting realistic but challenging objectives. They understand that they will need to be flexible and alert to the wants of the other party.

I really struggle to think on my feet when put under pressure during a negotiation – do you cover this on your Negotiation Skills courses?

We cover this on the Negotiation skills course. Preparing well at the outset will certainly help. If you prepare well, there’s less chance that you’ll be ambushed by the other party during the negotiation. There are a number of approaches that we’ll share with you to help you to think on your feet, all of which we cover on the Negotiation skills course. You’ll also feel much more confident once we’ve given you a chance to practise some of these.

Do you cover listening skills on the Negotiation skills course?

Yes, we do. Listening is an essential skill that all good negotiators possess. Not only do they listen but they also act and accommodate the messages coming across. If you able to show that you care and are interested in the wants and concerns of the other party, then you are likely to achieve more from the negotiation. This doesn’t mean giving in though. It simply means establishing how the objectives of the other party will impact on the achievement of your own objectives.

Is it better to work as a team during a negotiation?

It depends on the situation but generally the answer is yes. Be careful though. If you plan to work as a team, you’ll need to establish exactly what part each person is going to play. This can be very effective and gives the other party something additional to think about. However, if you don’t prepare properly, you’ll come across as a shambles, perhaps contradicting each other and failing in the negotiation.
